Good morning, Andrea,
I wasn't sure how you wanted to aim the discussion of tolerance. On a
personal and community level, there are *Noah's Bark* by Stephen Krensky
(where the ark is too noisy); the many versions of *It Could Always Be
Worse; and* Ann Stampler's wonderful *Something for Nothing* (probably more
outwitting than tolerance, but a fun story, which could lead to a
discussion of what do you do when something bothers you).

*The Bachelor and the Bean* by Fowles is fun, for the bachelor and the
thief end up compatibly yelling at one another. If you happen to have a
copy of Kimmel's rare *Mishka, Pishka, and Fishka*, there's a story inside
called "The Ant" about an ant who gets terribly frustrated by everyone's
knocking down his house, which happens to be built in the middle of the
road. Along those lines, I widened the search to include coexistence. The
story of "King Solomon and the Otter" by Forest, also appears in Ausubel,
"Whose Was the Blame" but alas both without pictures. And Stavish has
"Vengeance in Vain" in *Seeds from Out Past*, a version of which also
appears in Bialik's Book of Legends, Parables 23. Like the ant story, it's
about the bird who gets so angry when the waves keep washing away her nest.

That's all I could think of right now, except for Bialik's wonderful
passage about a person needing to be like a reed with many roots, able to
bend.
Best,
Sharon Elswit, NYC
P.S. Many of these will be referenced in the new Jewish Story Finder
coming out this fall.
