Cathy,
Mazal tov. It is very exciting to modernize a library.
The first step is educating yourself in what is available. I believe that library supply companies are still sending catalogs (I have not checked recently b/c I am retired). These companies sell library furniture and mostly have consultants. While they are sales people they can be very helpful later in getting you items at discount prices.
Visit the websites and order catalogs from of the following companies:
Gaylord 1-800-448-6160
Demco 1-800-245-1329
Brodart 1-888-820-4377
Highsmith 1-800-835-2329
Make sure that the space will be Wi-Fi and that the fire department will plan their alarms before you order shelves. The flashing lights take space and have to be visible. Consult with experts about proper lighting and make sure that every shelf is accessible for a person on wheelchair and fits the regulations. Think of your patrons' comfort and make it warm and user friendly. I worked also with experts on early childhood education to make the children room fit the educational needs as ell as kids safety and comfort. List your special collection items such as maps, music, arts and craft supply or electronic devices to make sure that you get furniture for them as well as for magazines and newspapers. Please feel free to contact me with further questions. I enjoyed planning a library. It is a nice learning experience.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Synagogue library renovation

My synagogue is in the early stages of planning a building
modernization that may involve substantial changes to the library,
possibly including a new location within the building.
I'm seeking advice from library committee members or librarians on
how to handle this process at various stages, particularly how to
deal effectively with the building modernization committee and
architects. Thanks.
