Dear Friends,
Rabbi Shlomo Aviner is recognized as a scholar and religious leader prominent in and since the mid-late 20th Cent. CE. Aviner born in France before the end of WWII, is chief rabbi of Bet El and of Yeshivat Ateret Yerushalayim (aka Ateret Cohanim) and has been a leading figure in the religious Zionist movement. His most recent work is a new commentary on Joshua, 'Sefer Yehoshu'ah,'from the Bible book of prophets. This book combines halakha, Jewish Law, as well as legal principles with Jewish Philosophy and is recommended for any library with holdings in Bible and Jewish Thought. Published Sifriyat Hava, Bet El. Cat. 79233 $23.00 Koren's 3 volumes of Rambam, Maimonides' Mishna Tora on Judges is certainly worthy of note. The work is a dual publication by Ma'aliyot. The accompanying modern commentary by R' Nahum Eliezer Rabinovich analyzes the earlier Rabbinic, including Tana'itic and Ge'onic sources utilized by Rambam. This work and these publishers are recommended for any library which has classics of rabbinic writings and as a reference work for future studies of Jewish Thought, Philosophy and law. Cat. 79268 $78.00 The renowned scholar, researcher and author, Yitzhak Alfasi has produced another volume in the encyclopedic series, Torat Ha-Hasidut. This is volume 4 published by Mossad Harav Kook. This series is highly recommended. I am sure that any serious library with a Judaica or Jewish Studies collection will have in its Hassidut collection the works of Gedalia Nigal and Yitzhak Alfasi. Cat. 79721 $ 39.00 Three Haggadot are worth noting at this time. The 'Allepo Haggada,' a large glossy book with pictures, documents and history of this ancient Syrian Jewish Community (aka Halab). Cat. 79171 $ 32.00 Another two Passover Haggadot are the Ve-Higgadita le-Binkha, published by Matan- Arts, Jan 2012 and is a modern hard cover haggadah with Jewish History noted at the bottom of the pages from the exodus, particularly the last 2000 years with dates 11th-20th Cent CE and ending in 1949 after the founding of the modern State of Israel. Cat.79261 $30.00 The Lublin Haggadah, also published by Matan Arts (late) 2011 has a few introductory pages by Prof Israel Bartal of the Hebrew University and a few pages of facsimiles and artworks from the Polish Jewish community. Cat. 79262 $27.00 . It seems to me that the former is more interesting and collection worthy, of these two haggadot. We would love to announce, promote and offer a new book 'Beit ha-haim,' (tp spelling), 'Final Resting Place,' laws and customs of Mourning among Judeo-Spanish (Ladino) Speaking Communities, by Shmuel Rafael Vivante and Moshe Elisha Bachar. The book is 106 pages, hard cover (with some photos and even a few facsimiles of book title pages) and is comprehensive from the laws and customs regarding the dying, the soul, the funeral, the burial, mourning, the shiva, gravestones, one year, sayings, psalms and more. Needless to say the book is a treasure of Judeo-Spanish, Ladino and Sephardi culture. The book is published by the Ladino Center at Bar Ilan U. It is a highly recommended jewel.
