Celebrate Israel's 64th birthday through art, archaeology, food, film, & dance at Hagigat Yisrael: A Yom Ha'atzmaut Celebration at North Suburban Synagogue Beth El (1175 Sheridan Rd., Highland Park, IL) on Wednesday, April 25, 2012. The event is open to the community, free of charge.
The celebration will begin at 1:00 pm with an Afternoon Tea and Exhibit Lecture in the Rissman Family Kol Ami Museum. Fran and Bernard Alpert will discuss the Museum's collection of Israeli antiquities. At 8:15 pm the Alpert's will return to discuss their upcoming book, Archaeology and the Biblical Record. They are the founders of Archaeological Seminars in Jerusalem and are licensed Israel tour guides and field archaeologists. They are known for their creative approach to understanding the Land of Israel. Two screenings will be offered of the new documentary film, My Brother's Keeper, at 6:15 pm and 8:15 pm. Between 1947-1949, more than 4,400 Jewish and non-Jewish volunteers came from 56 different countries to defend and fight for the fledgling State of Israel during its struggle for survival and independence. The short documentary tells the story of these Mahal volunteers. After the film, Izzie Weinzweig will share his experience as a member of Mahal during Israel's War of Independence. The history and spirit of the state of Israel come alive through an educational journey into Israeli dance. Join Sarah Rodin, Israeli Dance Instructor and member of Shalehet Aviv Israeli Dance Troupe, for an exploration of Israel through dance. Two sessions will be offered at 6:15 pm and 8:15 pm. All ages and levels of experience welcome! A falafel dinner will be available for purchase between 5:30-9:30 pm along with Israeli snacks and juices. This event is supported by a Ma'a lot Grant, a joint project of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism Israel Commission and Nefesh B'Nefesh.
