In the latter part of the 19th century, there was opposition to opening public libraries on Sundays in England. The objection was not to alowing library accessto working people on their only day off, but rather to requiring the library staff to work on Sunday. In some of the larger cities the problem was solved by assigning Jewish staff to provide Sunday service. (Presumably this enabled them to ave Saturday off from work.)
