Amalia Warshenbrot gave a very complete and convincing answer to Helene's
question about adding patron computers to the synagogue library. I concur with
everything she said. We finally have a new, faster and better patron computer
and while it doesn't increase traffic by much, it is creating happier patrons!
Ours is used only for internet access (no WORD, EXCEL, etc. although I would
personally recommend installing such software); through another login,
volunteers use the same computer to do some data entry in our new online
catalog. As several mentioned in Hasafran, neither guaratees more "foot
traffic" or more circulation, but I am convinced that more are now using the
library to browse our collection from home. Even if they do not take advantage
of the option to place a hold on a book (new skills take time to become
habits!), awareness has increased and will continue to do so as we "market" the
multiple opportunities offered by our online catalog, our new patron computer a
nd the ability to print and copy in the library. In my view, awareness,
although difficult to measure, is the key to the success of a synagogue
library. When new (and old!) patrons show up in person, either because they
have been reading our temple ENotes or bulletins or because their preschoolers
have dragged them here after school or because they are in the building anyway
and might as well take a look, the library is the winner!

Hi,

Does anyone still use the Athena cataloging system?

If so, perhaps you can help me. I would like to reuse barcodes of
deleted books, but find that 1) Athena seems very arbitrary about what
the system will or won't delete. Sometimes I can't delete the item, and
2) I find that the deleted item still shows up on shelf lists.
Therefore, I can't use that barcode again.

Has anyone had success reusing barcodes?

Thanks!!

We have one. It doesn't get us a lot more traffic, but a little; and it makes
the catalog available even if a lot of Hebrew School parents use it for job
hunting. The big consideration we had was to make sure that it wasn't on the
synagogue network, for security reasons. This means that I have to manually
transport our catalog to the public computer on a flash drive every couple of
weeks, but it's no biggie; and if the catalog is small enough to email, you can
do that too.

We have one computer for exclusive Patron use and it doesn't get much
traffic.
We also have WiFI -- and that actually gets a fair amount of use.

It gives the public access to our catalog, which we don't have on the Web.
Also, everyone doesn't carry a computer in. But we also get a certain number of
people who come in with laptops and use our slow wi-fi.

Dear Safranim,

New Book Announcement: The Destruction of Czestochova is the first in a series
of English translations of Yizkor books being made available through the
auspices of JewishGen Inc.?s new Yizkor-Books-in-Print Project. Jewishgen.org
is the most visited non-profit Jewish genealogical website online and is an
affiliate of the Museum of Jewish Heritage ? A Living Memorial to the
Holocaust, a member of the AJL. All of the books in the series will be in hard
cover, in a similar format, approximately 7? x 10? in size. Our intention is
for this unique literature to be the source for research and teaching the
history of Jewish communities in these towns.

For those unfamiliar with Yizkor books, they are memorial books written to
honor the lost Jewish communities of villages and towns that were destroyed by
the Nazis during World War II. The books in this series provide the history,
personalities, and institutions of the Jews in these villages in the years
before WWII. These translations provide the English speaking community with a
first-hand account in hard cover format, so that researchers and descendants of
those destroyed communities as well as museum, university and synagogue
libraries can offer this history.

The Destruction of Czestochova (Czestochowa, Poland) was first published in
Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1949 in Yiddish by survivors and former residents of
the town. For the assistance of researchers, the town has also been known as:
Czestochowa [Pol], Chenstochov [Yid], Tschenstochau [Ger], Censtochov? [Cz],
Chenstokhova [Rus], Chenstokhov, Chestokhova, Tshenstokhov.

Click here http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/YBIP_Czestochowa.html for more
information about The Destruction of Czestochowa.

We have two patron computers, and we are expecting a third computer which will
be designated for the Israel Museum/Dead Sea Scrolls only. The computers are
used a bit, usually by the same handful of people - but we would love more foot
traffic and usage. A recent increase in our programming has been bringing more
people into the library - and we are slowly - very slowly - getting more users.
Issues to consider may include patron usage of a printer, and possible conflict
with programs or meetings.

We have four touch screen computer for our patrons. They are used a lot.
Beside access to the internet, they can play movies from our DVD collection.(we
have ear phone available) We have links to research sites as well, as a link
to our on-line catalog and the on-line version of "Encyclopedia Judaica". Our
web link is under my signature line. This is a list we have the other links.

Library committee members and I have discussed the possibility of adding
computers to the synagogue library so that congregants can do research here. I
really need something to increase foot traffic. I am looking for advice as to
whether this is a good idea and the kinds of things that I need to consider.

I agree with all the previous replies to Helene?s question. I hope that she
will forward my reply to her concerned committee.
I see here three issue:
1. How to increase the foot traffic to any library and especially a synagogue
library
2. Using computers for research
3. Public access to the catalogue (Barbara Mends from ? )
1. A synagogue library is considered a special collection library like a law
library or a medical library. As such it does not get the same traffic that,
for example, the public library gets, but members of library committee are
always concerned b/c it looks like it does not justify the cost. The synagogue
library is important. It serves the synagogue school, individuals who wish to
become Jews by choice and those that wish to expand their Judaic studies .
Since the number of users is small theses libraries are open limited hours
with, often, one staff person. Are those eager to increase the foot traffic
also ready to support full time staff and support staff ? Are they willing
to keep the library open and staffed 6 days a week from 9:00am to 9:00pm ? The
users deserve the best collection and a knowledgeable person to direct them to
the best resources available in the library or that can be borrowed from
another library.
Foot traffic is increased by offering programs, but I found that it did not
increase the circulation. I saw parents coming for a children program yet they
did not even look at the books around them or adults coming for a lecture and
never come again, but the publicity for the programs creates awareness of the
library which helps when you ask for support. We revived donations from
people who had never set foot in the library.
2. As Andrea and others noted, With PC, laptops, wireless etc. having
patron computers in a synagogue library will not do much to increase traffic. A
lot of research is done at home today and we cannot change it even if we can
offer better resources.
3.We had a a public access computer just in front of the patrons? eyes. at the
entrance before they approached the circulation desk, but they still asked a
staff person to locate a book for them.
I strongly recommend an on-line catalogue. Many patrons no longer browse for
books. They find on-line what they need and put it on hold. I love the self
service checkout in my local public library. It saves time and gives me what I
need, but it does not really increase the foot-traffic in the library therefor
one the branches here in Charlotte NC offers now a drive thru for pick up items
on reserve. Hurray for the lazy. For most of the potential library users it is
dayyenu.

It gives the public access to our catalog, which we don't have on the Web.
Also, everyone doesn't carry a computer in. But we also get a certain number of
people who come in with laptops and use our slow wi-fi.

We have one. It doesn't get us a lot more traffic, but a little; and
it makes the catalog available even if a lot of Hebrew School parents use it
for job hunting. The big consideration we had was to make sure that it wasn't
on the synagogue network, for security reasons. This means that I have to
manually transport our catalog to the public computer on a flash drive every
couple of weeks, but it's no biggie; and if the catalog is small enough to
email, you can do that too.
