Dear Friends,

On Israel Independence Day 64, the Israel Prizes are awarded at a nationally
televised ceremony. This year Natan Shaham was the Israel Prize winner for
Hebrew Literature. I am proud to say we scooped this one. Recently we were
asked to make suggestions and provide a list of leading, prize winning
authors and books under this heading and we did.

Yosef Oren has authored, 'Nituts ha-Mitosim be-Sifrut ha- Yisraelit,'

author and publisher is a literary critic and researcher, prizewinner and he
analyzes the novels of leading writers such as Hayim Be'er, Tsruya Shalev,
Yael Hedaya, Eshkol Nevo, Yoram Kaniuk and others. We recommend this book
to all readers and scholars of Hebrew Literature and Israel. Cat. 79534 $
24.00

In the area of literary analysis and comparative literature, Carmel has
published, 'Be-Mevokh ha-Mar'ot,' ' Reflections in the Labyrinth, Essays on
Hebrew Literature and Literature in General, by Ya'ara Ben-David. The book
treats authors from Kafaka, Becket and Steinbeck, through Israeli authors,
like Aharon Appelfeld and Hayim Guri. Topics like identity, prose,
Holocaust, parenting and more are examined through the work of many great
writers. (Other Israeli writers of Hebrew Literature include, Ruth Netzer,

We must mention Amos Oz's newest book, 'Bein Haverim,' 'Between Friends,'
published by Keter. Nothing need to be said about this giant of Hebrew
Litearture and his tight simple language depicting Kibbutz life and
conflicts. Undoubtedly a must have, right? Cat.
79077 $24.00

You will surely be interested in Ahron Appelfeld's new book, 'Ad Hod ha-
tsa-ar,' 'To the edge of sorrow,'and once again little, if anything needs to
be said about this famous author. The winner of the Israel Prize for
Literature in 1983 writes in a powerful, modern style and evokes the
emotions and memories of the Holocaust in his works. Published by Kinneret
Zmora-Bitan and Dvir, isbn 978-965-552-261-7. Cat. 79248 $26.00

Metsada,' by Yuval Albashan is an action, mystery novel worth mentioning and
adding to the collection. It meshes Israeli and mid-east politics and a
story of negotiations to free an Israeli prisoner. Published by Yediot.
Cat. 78402 $32.00

While it is of dubious merit and entirely subjective to suggest what is
valuable and important in the area of Hebrew Literature and Israeli Culture,
we still try. The new book by Dan Almagor entitled, 'Ha-Tsuptsik shel
ha-kumkum,' 'the Kettle and the Spout,' is such a book. The book of Songs,
ballads, by this major figure in Israeli culture, poet, playright, stretches
from the 1950's to the t990's. The book has pictures, illustrations and the
texts have vocalization. This is Israeli culture presented over more than
40 years. This is Hebrew Literature and Poetry and much more. Don't miss it,
isbn 978-965-552-210-5, published by Kinneret Zmora - Bitan.
Cat 79210 $ 38.00
