On Israel Independence Day 64, the Israel Prizes are awarded at a nationally televised ceremony. This year Natan Shaham was the Israel Prize winner for Hebrew Literature. I am proud to say we scooped this one. Recently we were asked to make suggestions and provide a list of leading, prize winning authors and books under this heading and we did. Politics in songs are analyzed and the political literature of Palestinians is discussed. The book treats authors from Kafaka, Becket and Steinbeck, through Israeli authors, like Aharon Appelfeld and Hayim Guri. Topics like identity, prose, Holocaust, parenting and more are examined through the work of many great writers. Cat. 79077 $24.00 You will surely be interested in Ahron Appelfeld's new book, 'Ad Hod ha- tsa-ar,' 'To the edge of sorrow,'and once again little, if anything needs to be said about this famous author. The winner of the Israel Prize for Literature in 1983 writes in a powerful, modern style and evokes the emotions and memories of the Holocaust in his works. Cat. 79463 $33.00 On the side of popular prose in Hebrew, let us mention Ram Oren, 'Nefesh Homiya,' 'Yearning Soul,' has been published by Keshet, isbn 978-965-7130-43-8. Cat 78857 $ 25.00 .... 'Tik Metsada,' by Yuval Albashan is an action, mystery novel worth mentioning and adding to the collection. It meshes Israeli and mid-east politics and a story of negotiations to free an Israeli prisoner. Published by Yediot. Cat. 78402 $32.00 While it is of dubious merit and entirely subjective to suggest what is valuable and important in the area of Hebrew Literature and Israeli Culture, we still try. The new book by Dan Almagor entitled, 'Ha-Tsuptsik shel ha-kumkum,' 'the Kettle and the Spout,' is such a book. The book of Songs, ballads, by this major figure in Israeli culture, poet, playright, stretches from the 1950's to the t990's. The book has pictures, illustrations and the texts have vocalization. This is Israeli culture presented over more than 40 years. This is Hebrew Literature and Poetry and much more. Don't miss it, isbn 978-965-552-210-5, published by Kinneret Zmora - Bitan.
