The book begins with her personal journey into the Jewish heartland of Lithuania - the land of her Jewish forebears - but then expands into an exploration of how Lithuania today is engaging with its complex 20th-century history. Probing the terrain of memory and moral dilemmas, Cassedy shines a spotlight on fragile efforts toward mutual understanding. Her book asks challenging questions and carries a message of hope. Michael Steinlauf, author of Bondage to the Dead: Poland and the Memory of the Holocaust,says: "Pioneering...will reach out to all those who care about not replaying in this new century the disasters of the century that has just ended."
