Hello Safranim, We all know that the economy is uncertain at best and we've all heard about, or even experienced, the burdens of student loans in a weak job market. For those reasons, I'd like to call your attention to the AJL Scholarship Fund. We provide two scholarships annually to students in Library and Information Science programs at accredited institutions who show interest in and ability for careers in Judaica librarianship. This year we had a "crop" of twelve excellent applicants who showed tremendous promise. It was extremely difficult to narrow it down to two winners, but we managed. The winners for this year are [drum roll] Rina Krautwirth and Rachel Bloch Shapiro. Mazal tov to both of them. We hope they will be able to graduate from their programs with less debt because of this scholarship and that the recognition on their CV's will help them to get good paying jobs.
It is really an honor to be able to award these scholarships and with the graying of our profession, it is heartening to see bright young people stepping into Judaica Librarianship. When I read the applications this year I was filled with optimism for our profession's future. I only hope we will be able to continue to award the scholarships. Donations have been down significantly this year. For not much more than you pay to buy a mushy card in a store, you can make a meaningful donation to the fund as a way of honoring someone or remembering someone and in doing that, help us to provide scholarships in the future. Donations can be sent to me at the address below. Don't forget to include the name, address and reason for the tribute card you would like sent. Here are donations and tributes from the fund for 2012: Ronda Rose - Get well wishes to Jom Rosenbloom. Elliot H. Gertel - To Anne Dublin in memory of your beloved mother Gail Dublin. Lynn Feinman - To Eleanor Siegel in memory of your son Steven Siegel. Sarah Barnard - To Israela Ginsburg in memory of your father Dov Perlman. Sarah M.
