Dear members of AJL -

It seems like at least once a month I read in Hasafran about yet another
librarian's position in a synagogue being eliminated, phased out, realigned or
redesigned. This is now the case with my own position as the librarian (20
hours a week) at Temple Emanuel in Denver, where we have a large library of
more than 10,000 titles that serves both the temple and the community of metro
Denver. The position of librarian will be replaced with another part-time
position - Educator (Teacher)/Librarian. As many of you have expressed, I too
fear for the future of librarianship in the community of synagogue libraries -
in this case, though not totally eliminated, I expect the importance of the
library will be diminished as it is re-focused to be an education library.

I have told the temple administration that I do not intend to apply for the new
position. They hope to have the new person onboard by July 1, the beginning of
our fiscal year. I have offered to help train that person on the library side
of his/her responsibilites. If that cannot be done before July 1st, it is
possible that the temple will hire me as a consultant to complete the training.
If you have been hired as a consultant after termination from your library
position, I am interested in knowing what arrangements you have made and what
fee you have charged.

If you reply in Hasafran, (it may be useful to other readers to see your
response), please also respond to me personally at:
