Dear Colleagues, I am putting together a full-score critical edition of Joseph Rumshinsky's operetta, Di goldene kale (The golden bride), premiered in New York February 9, 1923, and widely performed in various cities around the U.S. and Europe. I am working---in cooperation with the composer's daughter---from manuscripts in the Rumshinsky Nachlass at UCLA, plus manuscripts, recordings, and typescripts at the American Jewish Historical Society, Harvard, and YIVO. The score is scheduled to be published by the American Musicological Society as part of its MUSA (Music of the United States of America) series.
As members of AJL know, there are lots of materials relevant to Yiddish operettas that are buried in various collections across the country, sometimes with internal finding lists but often without clues to the outside world that the materials even exist. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who can help me locate music, librettos, programs, posters, photographs, reviews, documents---indeed, any information at all relating to this work and performances of it. The libretto is by Frieda Freiman (not, as many sources say, by her husband, Louis Freiman) and the lyrics are by Louis Gilrod. The original cast included Michal Michalesko, Annie Thomashefsky, Fanny Lubritzky, Lucy Finkel, Yudel Dubinsky, Kalman Juvelier, Boris Rosenthal, and Hyman (Hymie) Jacobson, who also did the choreography. I have been able to obtain copies of all the contemporaneous recordings but one: “Ich hob chosanim far alle meidlach,” recorded 4/1923 on 10ʺ Columbia E9014, mx 89159-1, by Boris Rosenthal and chorus.
