CFP: SAM Jewish Studies Interest Group Call for Presentations
Society for American Music Annual Meeting:
Little Rock, Arkansas, March 6-10, 2013

I am pleased to announce a roundtable session for the 2013 annual meeting of
the SAM Jewish Studies Interest Group entitled "Musical Representations of the
'New Jew' in Twentieth-Century Popular Media of the United States." This
session serves in part as a reaction to Nathan Abrams' recently published
study, The New Jew in Film: Exploring Jewishness and Judaism in Contemporary
Cinema (Rutgers University, 2012). In exploring over three-hundred films,
Abrams sets out to illuminate a notable upsurge in the diversity of Jewish
representation in film by the late twentieth-century. Most noteworthy, however,
is "[his] concern to reveal how the representation of the Jew is used to convey
confidence or anxieties about Jewish identity and history as well as questions
of racial, sexual, and gender politics"
(http://rutgerspress.rutgers.edu/acatalog/the_new_jew_in_film.html).

The Interest Group is soliciting proposals for ten-minute presentations
relating to musical representations of Jewishness in the twentieth century in
all spheres of popular media of the United States. We envision the roundtable
as a structured but informal occasion for a lively exchange of ideas. We will
begin with brief individual presentations, then move on to questions and
discussion relating to the topics presented and other areas of interest to the
speakers and attendees.

Your contributions need not be conceived as formally delivered papers, but must
be well organized presentations. The ten-minute limit is inclusive of any music
or media. In the interest of fostering a cross-disciplinary conversation that
will continue after the conference, we encourage submissions from scholars in
all fields; we likewise welcome graduate student submissions.

The following is a list of topics for your consideration:

Musical representation of Jewishness in:
1) television of all eras;
2) the Broadway musical;
3) twentieth-century film;
4) radio dramas of the 40s-50s;
5) documentaries intended for mass consumption.

Please send a title and abstract of 150 words in an attached Word document to
[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> no later than July 10, 2012. Proposals will be
forwarded to the program committee for blind review. (Do not include any
identifying information in your submission). The committee will select no more
than two presentations from those submitted. Our decision will be communicated
by the third week of July. We look forward to reviewing your abstracts.
