Jewish Olympians is a good idea, w/ a tribute to the Munich athletes and
delving into that whole event. Anne's book for kids about Bobbie Rosenfeld is
one of my favorites. ?Although I read it years ago, I still remember many of
the features that were so different for athletes, as opposed to today, when
training is a full-time activity. Back in the day, athletes worked all day at
jobs, then had to fit in practice! ?And taking a ship over to Europe for the
games (no flights yet), which could take weeks-- very different.? Andrea

Barbara,
I love the theme of Jews in sport for the One-Synagogue-One-Book program.? It
engages all age groups and genders.
The list that I?v sent before is only a sample.?
When we celebrate Jews in sport we must remember the 11 Israeli athletes that
were murdered in Munich on 1972.? The memory of that day is still fresh in my
mind.? I was on a bus in Tel Aviv.? There was not even one passenger? with dry
eyes.?? The thought of young Israelis in Europe (as opposite to a picture of? a
Jew as a victim)? being shot? with their hands tied behind their back was hard
to imagine.
In? 2005 Sony Pictures Home
Entertainment produced the? DVD? 21 HOURS IN MUNICH. Simon Reeve book in 2000?
One day in September: the full story of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre and
the Israeli revenge operation "Wrath of God" .?
Other movies deal with the Israeli retaliation well.? I prefer to show only the
part of the assignation of the athletes.
One little correction to my list.?
I listed collective biographies,? but added Anne Dublin?s book Bobbie Rosenfeld
The Olympian who could do everything. . Anne is an AJL member and an award
winning author. I could not resist it.
Best of luck.

  Jews in sports

We're looking into doing Jews in Sports for next
  year's theme instead of One-Synagogue-One-Book.
  ?
We're looking for books and other materials for
young and old that aren't about Hank Greenberg or Sandy Koufax or Lipman
Pike.
In fact, we'd like to go outside baseball, and maybe even find some women if
there are any. Fiction would be good too, but can't think of anything between
The Natural and The Art of Fielding, and the only thing Jewish about those is
their authors. We need to broaden our horizons! Please shower ideas on
  us!
  ?
  Thanks!

The Golem's Mighty Swing by James Sturm - the only Jewish baseball graphic
novel. A nice touch - mentioned in an interview, but not in the book itself -
was how Sturm incorporated the text of an anti-Semitic opinion piece in a
newspaper and reprinted it as a radio broadcast in the story.

FYI, the syndicated comic strip Gil Thorp had a 10-month storyline in which
high school football star (& then basketball star) David Green was criticized
for not playing games on the sabbath. When they decided to drop the character,
they skirted around the issue of Green dating a non-Jewish girl by having his
family move to another city. You (& your patrons) can read the story online by
going to http://www.gocomics.com/gilthorp/2001/09/01 and advancing until

I'd forgotten about this one since it is not in my collection yet and I'm not
aware of any English-language editions, just the French one.

The graphic book is titled Moussa et David : Deux enfants d'un meme pays (trans
: Moussa and David : Two children in the same country) written by Maurice
Rajsfus.

It may be purchased online at Amazon France - http://www.amazon.fr

You may watch a teaser (with Jewish and Arabic music) with screen shots of the
pages at http://www.kewego.fr/video/iLyROoaftf1J.html

Basically, David and Moussa become friends through playing soccer.

According to Worldcat, copies are held at USC, UCLA, Stanford, & Harvard.
