A memoir suited to the age group--and good for adults too (I enjoyed it)--
is Esther Hautzig's THE ENDLESS STEPPE. Esther at eleven, with
her family, was deported from Vilna to Siberia. as Nazis and
Red Army clashed. It is a story of
their survival despite the cold, the living conditions, and forced labor.
