Review:

"Abramovich has done a scrupulous job in scrutinizing these key texts of
contemporary Hebrew fiction. The care with which he sets them in their
historical and cultural contexts should be instructive for all readers
interested in Israel and its predicaments."-Robert Alter, Class of 1937
Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature, The University of California
at Berkeley

Living Jewishly: A Snapshot of a Generation

By Stefanie Pervos Bregman

ISBN 978-1-618111-63-0

155pp. (cloth)

$49.00

In the Jewish communal world, engaging 20- and 30-somethings is a hot button
issue: How do we get young Jews to feel connected to Israel? To affiliate
with traditional Jewish institutions? To care about Jewish continuity,
ritual and tradition? As a member of this elusive generation, Stefanie
Bregman set out to tackle these questions and sought out to compile a
collection of personal essays and memoirs from Jewish 20- and 30-somethings
across the country.

Review: "At once confrontational, comforting, and hilarious this is the
definitive 'Who am I? and why am I?' book for Jews of our generation. I can
only hope to one day contribute to a collection this rigorous, this
touching, and this important for the question of our identity as
Jews."-Mayim Bialik Ph.D. author of Beyond the Sling

Zohar HaRakia

By Shimon Duran

Translated by Phillip Caplan

ISBN 978-1-936235-57-5

530pp. (cloth)

$75.00

This text consists of an English translation of the medieval book, Zohar
Harakia, an important source work on the analysis of the 613 commandments of
the Torah. The Zohar Harakia takes as a point of departure the poetic
enumeration of the commandments by Solomon ibn Gabirol. The author, Shimon
ben Zemach Duran, explains the often obscure language of ibn Gabirol. As an
accomplished Talmudic authority, he also explains the foundational
theoretical work on the enumeration by Maimonides, and the dissenting views
of Nachmanides. Thus, it serves as a summary of work on the enumeration of
the commandments up to the modern period. Duran's style is user friendly,
and the translation provides useful notes.

Review:

"Philip Caplan's translation of Zohar Harakia by Shimon ben Zemach Duran is
a learned and faithful rendition of an important Jewish religious classic.
The work consists of a commentary by a major medieval rabbi on a major
liturgical poem by the great Solomon ibn Gabirol dealing with the 613
commandments. Mr. Caplan's translation will be studied and appreciated by
anyone who is interested in medieval Jewish halakha, poetry, and
liturgy."-Raymond P. Scheindlin, Professor of Medieval Hebrew Literature,
Jewish Theological Seminary of America
