Long-time members of our synagogue, Fran & Bernie Alpert, published a new book, ARCHAEOLOGY AND THE BIBLICAL RECORD (Hamilton Books, an imprint of University Press of America/Rowman & Littlefield, 2012) that I would like to share with my AJL colleagues. L'Shana Tova! Rachel Kamin, Director The Joseph and Mae Gray Cultural & Learning Center North Suburban Synagogue Beth El 1175 Sheridan Road Highland Park, IL 60035 847/432-8903 x242 or <blocked::mailto:[email protected]> [email protected] Office Hours: Monday 12:30-6:30pm, Tuesday-Friday 9:00am-1:30pm, Sunday 8:30-11:30am (when school is in session) ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Bernard and Fran Alpert have lived in Jerusalem for 31 years. Bernie has excavated at Damascus Gate, the Citadel of David, the Gate of the Essenes, and the Western Wall area, as well as Herodian (Herod's winter palace) and Jericho. He is currently in charge of the excavation at Beit Guvrin/Tel Maresha in co-operation with the Antiquities Authority and the National Parks of Israel. Fran is a well-known guide, with extensive experience in Israel and Jordan, and is an engaging lecturer on the archaeology and history of Jerusalem. Founders of Archaeological Seminars Institute, the Alperts have been able to evaluate firsthand the benefit of an inquiry-based approach to understanding Israel. Their innovative excavation program has welcomed more than one million participants who have had the opportunity to study and learn by participating in an ongoing archaeological excavation. Archaeology has come alive for them, not only through the dig process, but also through interactive walking tours, seminars, and study courses offered by Archaeological Seminars Institute for nearly three decades. With the valuable help of Dr. Ian Stern, a long-time colleague in these endeavors, Archaeological Seminars Institute has offered a two-year course designed to train tour guides in English. To date more than 250 Licensed Government Guides have completed in-depth studies in geography, history, the Bible, botany, and modern politics, and are working with visitors and students alike, using Archaeological Seminars' unique educational approach to tourism. Fran and Bernie Alpert hold Master's degrees in Classical Archaeology from Oxford University/Wolfson College. They have lived in Israel since 1979, carrying both US and Israeli passports. ABOUT THE BOOK: The compilers, or redactors, of the Biblical text received their inspiration many centuries after the periods that they recorded. The archaeological record as we know it today was not available to them. In the absence of actual dates and corroborated history, they turned to tradition and legend, often viewing the past through the prism of contemporary events. The archaeological record is open to criticism and interpretation, but it cannot be changed. What has been uncovered from the past reveals the emerging history of that past. Look through the eyes of the archaeologist and see what history has given us to explain events from the 16th through the 6th century BCE. The dust is settling, and the facts that underlie the epic of the Bible are coming into focus. The authors of Archaeology and the Biblical Record are uniquely qualified to bring the historic and archaeological detail of the Bible into focus. With Masters' degrees in Classical Archaeology from Oxford University, they have spent the past three decades excavating and guiding in Israel, and lecturing both there and in the United States. Their perspective guides the reader toward a richer, more complete understanding of the interface between the Bible record and historical accounts.
