The subject area of rabbinics can be obscure and technical but is an anchor
of Jewish Studies and scholarship. For centuries rabbinic writings shaped
the law, custom, thinking and history of Jewish communities and life. The
field overlaps Bible and Jewish Thought among others. While most of what
follows is strictly within the area of 'rabbinics/sifre kodesh, let's begin
with a couple of titles that are important and modern but straddle
'rabbinics,' and are more Jewish Thought, Philosophy, History and Hebrew
literature.

 

The well known author, Yochi Brandes has written, 'Pardes Akiva,' which
depicts the sage, Rabbi Akiva and explores the contradictions in him and how
formative his leadership and thinking is to Judaism. The book is published

Gershon Brin has authored, 'Reuel and his friends,' in Hebrew. Jewish
Byzantine exegesis of the 10th Cent. CE. This is an important scholarly work

Megillat Kohelet im perush shema shelomo, has been published by the Merkaz
Moreshet Yahadut Bavel. It is edited by Shaul Regev and Yakov tsion Zamir
and includes the commentary of Rabbi Shelomo Tawina. This is a scholarly
work and includes the author's translation of the Hebrew text into

There is a new important series, the Talmud Bavli, Koren - Steinzaltz
edition. This is a new edition, volume one (1), Berakhot (only) has been
published. It is/has the Vilna Talmud in Aramaic and separately, in English
the commentary of Adin Steinzaltz. It is Highly recommended. The price may

Responsa and Halakha, volume 3 of 'Sefer She'elot u'teshuvot Ma'amar
Mordekhai,' the work of the former Sephardi Chief Rabbi Mordecai Eliyahu.
This is recommended for those collecting Jewish Philosophy, Rabbinic Thought
and Halakha for a different perspective (from the Lithuanian/Brisk/Mir
approach and the Hassidic/Haredi view), rather a more moderate, religious
nationalist approach as developed by R' Eliyahu, z"l. isbn 9789657535226

Sh"ut Sha'are Tsion, she'elot u-teshuvol u-birure Halakha, (on) 'Le-' kotel
ha-ma'aravi, the Western Wall, part 2, by R' Shmuel Rabinovitz (known as the
Rav of the Kotel) has just been published. This is serious modern scholarly
Halakha including responsa by R' Amar, Sephardi Chief Rabbi and R' Neventzal
among others, topics include, vows and charity, archaeological digs at the
wall, prayer of other religions at the Wall plaza, prayers blessings of
kohanim, priestly class, use of animals for handicapped and many other

Sefer Menorat ha-Maor a 14th Cent. CE classic has been published in a large
impressive 'yemenite' edition. The book has text and commentary by R' Isaac
Abuhav (aboav) of Spain, as well as facsimile pages from manuscript. The

Album Daf ha-Yomi has been published by Rabbi David Abraham Mandelboim and
the Machon le-hantsahat hakhme Polin. The work commemorates the beginning of
the structured learning of all the Talmud in Poland, Warsaw and today Israel
and worldwide from 1929 - 1990's. This book is a 'popular' glossy album with
photos and many newspaper articles, letters and documents. The book is in
Hebrew but some articles are in Yiddish. There is much rabbinic history of
pre war Europe and Israel and worldwide including the history of the
institutions of Hakhme Polin and Agudas Israel and their leaders. Cat. #
