Personal names, corporate bodies and uniform titles searching in The National Library of Israel catalog is being changed so that searching any of these headings in any script (Latin, Hebrew, Cyrillic or Arabic) will retrieve results in all the scripts. Implementation of this project, which Elhanan Adler presented at the last AJL conference, began at the beginning of September and is using Multiscript authority records which is part of ALEPH (our ILS) functionality. The first stage, based on files received from VIAF, created 8000 multilingual authority records. This change is being made gradually, with more enhanced authority records being created every day. If a search retrieves results only in the script of the search term we recommend searching also under alternate script terms. We would be most pleased for your cooperation. If while searching the NLI catalogue, you come across headings which should be combined, or were erroneously combined, please send an email to [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>. Work is also progressing on providing Hebrew translations for topical and geographic subjects. We expect that implementation of this project will be begin in December 2012. Riny Goldsmith
