I have none to suggest, but to be certain, I checked Linda Silver's JPS Guide to the Best Jewish Books for Children and Teens. There is a gaping whole in children's Judaica in this area--chapter books-/fiction about Israel--for the middle grades. I have even written to a favorite author and Sydney Taylor winner asked her directly to write such a book--she told me she is no longer writing for children. Exacerbating the problem is the fact that there *are* a number of children's novels about the Middle East situation which are blatantly biased and poison young readers' minds about Israel and Israelis. The AJL Newsletter has reviewed a number of these. Although written for older children, The Bat-Chen Diaries has excerpts that speak to younger children. While not exactly "a chapter book"-- this is a compilation of years' worth of actual diary entries, poems, etc. of an Israeli girl who was killed in a terrorist attack on her 15th birthday, it is a possible answer to your contact, worthy of a look. And there are some very decent non-fiction books, like Marcia Gresko's Israel , Laurie Grossman's Children of Israel, and Jennifer Rozines Roy's Israel for that grade level; They may not bet available in paperback. In short, you have put your finger on a major problem and lack in Jewish children's publishing, and believe me, many teachers and parents nationally have expressed their frustration, as their children are subjected to inaccurate and hostile presentations of Israel and Israelis in the classroom.Andrea RappWise Temple, Cincinnati, Ohio

I would appreciate your suggestions. I am working with a private, non-Jewish school that would like recommendations for a chapter book about Israel for grades 3 through 5 that all students would read as part of their school work. Can you suggest a few books? Toby -- Toby G.
