 J.I. Segal Awards Gala 2012

J.I. Segal Awards Gala which will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 
7:30 p.m. at the Jewish Public Library, 5151 Côte Ste-Catherine Road, Montreal.

The Gala will honour the winners of awards in various categories for their 
creative work on Jewish themes and their contributions to Jewish Education. 
These prestigious awards are handed out biennially and were established in 1968 
to honour the memory of the great Canadian Yiddish poet, J.I. Segal. This year, 
Mr. David Botwinik will also be recognized for his vital contribution to Jewish 
music in his book From Holocaust to Life.

 

This year's winners are: 

 

Canadian Jewish Studies Award (Sponsored by The Concordia University Institute 
for Canadian Jewish Studies):

"The Defining Decade: Identity, Politics, and the Canadian Jewish Community in 
the 1960's" by Harold Troper (University of Toronto Press)

 

Yaacov Zipper Award in Education:  Chaia Libstug

 

English Fiction and Poetry Award on a Jewish Theme (Sponsored by Mona Elaine 
Adilman):

"The Meaning of Children" by Beverly Akerman (Exile Editions) and "Snowball, 
Dragonfly, Jew." by Stuart Ross (ECW Press)

 

French Literature Award on a Jewish Theme (Sponsored by the Shulamis Yellin 
Fund):

"Trajectoires juives au Quebec" by Pierre Anctil (Presse de L'Université Laval)

 

Translation award for a Book on a Jewish Theme (Sponsored by Marlene and Joel 
King in memory of Gisia Kisilevsky):

"Pinch of Time," by Claude Tatilon, translated by Jacob Homel and David Homel. 
(Exile Editions)

 

Michael Moskovitz Award for a Film on a Jewish Theme:

 "I Was the Child of a Holocaust Survivor" Anne Marie Fleming (director - 
Sleepy Dog Films), Michael Fukushima (producer - National Film Board of Canada)

 

English Non-Fiction Award on a Jewish Theme (Sponsored by Sara and Irwin

Azrieli Institute Award for Best Book in Israel Studies in English or  French
