Yes. But, for this there are tricks.You can not depend on the internet.
It's like Alice through the Looking Glass, i.e., you know it has to
exist, the question is how to get at it. The biggest problem of all, be
it for adult or children's literature, is copyright and postage.
Copyright because many companies can not send outside of their own
countries but on the other hand, the book is not published anywhere else
in the world. And Postage/Shipping/Handling because even if they do send
out of their own country, the postage is prohibitive and costs 2-3 times
the price of the book. To side-step this problem a friend has to buy
the book for you where it is published. Once bought it is a used book
and can be sent to you in a plain brown paper wrapper.
Copyright and Postage problems aside, first you have to find the books:
....go from one spanish language publishing company to the next and wade
through everything they publish book by book.
... frequent second-hand book stores especially in Mexico, Chile and
Argentina.
...contact the big federations like USCJ, WUPJ, Recontructionists,
BneiBrit, Hadassah, etc. to see if they have anything at all; it goes in
spurts so you have to keep going back and asking. If you are interested
in Jabad, keep in mind that 85% of their translations are just
lordy-lord *a*w*f*u*l*, they are practically unreadable. I bought one
once just to test the water. As far as I could tell, it was in some
exotic language that uses Spanish words. I tossed it, money I could have
spent on something in Spanish-spanish.
...call up or visit every single synagogue and synagogue school from
Mexico to Costa Rica to Argentina and ask them personally if they have
any legal publications, or perhaps in-house publications for
children/young adults. These latter publications come with an added
problem of copyright because most of the in-house synagogue translations
are boot-leg and they can't legally sell you a copy. But there are ways
around that, some more theatrical than others, for example....
(PAUSE. OK. For all you legal eagles out there, close your eyes, hit
delete on this email, and/or stick your fingers in your ears and hum
"Call me maybe-here's my number" loudly.)
...Bold as brass. Right in front of everybody. Like the aspiration of
your life has always been to be the Bonnie part of Bonnie and Clyde. You
say: Oh, look, what a lovely bound-edition of a photocopy of a bootleg
book, is this an extra copy?, let me put it in my day pack to protect it
from thieves and oh, look, there's the library donation box, let me
leave an ample donation for your beautiful library. Or sometimes if you
whine loudly enough, they just give it to you to shut you up. By any
road I usually leave behind a carrot cake or a bag of homemade cookies.
...ask all of the publishing companies in Israel if they have some
Spanish versions in their collections.
...ask individual authors if they happen to have a translation (Peninah
Schram, for example)
... ask where you don't think you'll find anything at all
... be a total NUDNIK and bug everybody (like your mother) to keep an
eye out for stuff in Spanish, every now and again there is a saint out
there who sees something in Spanish in a 1$ a pound library fund-raiser
book sale. They buy it for you and they send it to you and then you knit
them a pair of mittens, or plan their next cruise-ship trip to Spain as
a thank you (knitting and the trip planning are always fun).
...be careful with spanish books that look Jewish but are really
Chrisitain; double check. Before anyone sends you or before you buy a
book always read the last 3 pages; somewhere near the end of the story
there is always a tell-tale reference to "....and from this tale we see
that Jesus is our true saviour..." or something like that.
...and...
If you see a classic like "Hitler robó el conejo rosa" by Judith Kerr,
no matter how ratty it might look, buy it, take it home and fix it. All
children/young adult fiction/non-fiction books have an expiration date
on them like a bottle of milk and all new publications at least in
Spanish have a limited printing of about 500 copies. Once those copies
are sold, they will never-ever make a second printing. I have rued days
when I let a book slip by me because I lacked the money to buy it and
the next day it was gone and Oh, dear, sorry, that was our last copy
and there are no plans to republish.
Hope this helps orient those looking for jewish kid lit in Spanish (or
anything in Spanish for that matter). A list of some of the publishing
houses that produce on a regular basis translations of jewish and/or
israeli material into Spanish plus a lista of almost every
children/young adult book we have in Spanish follows. We don't go out of
our way to buy for kids. Since we don't have any kids the greater part
of the book budget goes on adult material which is equally as difficult
to find in Spanish.
