I use OPALS. It's definitely time-consuming and challenging to learn a new
system but well worth it, I believe. We were already automated but needed to
switch to another program to go online. I love having a "portal" to our
library and try to use it as our library website. Though the synagogue has a
page for the library, I don't have quick control over it and I can't really use
it freely. I can't say whether the online catalog increases circulation or
use, but my hope is that it gives us more visibility, something to promote, and
keeps it accessible. It's also a statement that it's 2013 now and we have
caught up with the rest of the world! For better or worse, the value of a
library cannot always be counted!

Subject: [ha-Safran] Online Catalog

The library committee of the Bendiner Library of Temple Beth El is researching
the possibility of upgrading its search catalog so that it can be viewed
online. What experiences have other libraries had with making its catalog
available online. Was the monetary investment worth it? Has it resulted in an
increase in use of the library by members?

Your comments are appreciated.

Thank you.
