Dear Colleagues,

I will be giving a talk, "Tailoring an Operetta to Its Audience: Joseph
Rumshinsky's 'Di goldene kale' (1923)." Known in English as "The Golden Bride,"
the work is a comedy carefully designed to both move and entertain a very
specialized audience: Yiddish-speaking immigrants and their families. It is a
comedy with pathos (a basic ingredient), love, "Jewish-style" music, a kiddush,
acts set in a shtetl and in America, a lullaby that slips into Russian, a
shadkhen, an assimilated Jews speaking broken Yiddish, and other features that
combine to offer attendees a meaningful evening based on their past and present
experiences. Included are original-cast and other recordings of the time. The
program is part of the Jewish Music Forum, a project of the American Society
for Jewish Music. The event will take place on Friday, February 22, 10:30 a.m.
to 12 p.m., at the Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th Street, New York, NY
10011.
