I know this is going from the sublime to the ridiculous, but I was reading
through some past Hasafran digests and saw the message from Robert J. Weinberg,
Curator of the Rowe Bookplate Museum, about Jewish bookplates in prayerbooks.
It reminded me that I have a cache of "Don't be one of the Shlemiel Crooks,
This book belongs to___" bookplates, and would be happy to mail a stack to any
library (especially those that serve children) before Passover. The bookplate
is based on the cover of the picture book Shlemiel Crooks, which has a Passover
theme and is a Sydney Taylor Honor Book. If you'll email me your name, library
address, and number of bookplates you want, I'll be happy to put them in the
mail. You can see the artwork at:

Some of you may recall that the Kaufman Center in New York commissioned a
musical play for children and families based on Shlemiel Crooks. The play is
set in St. Louis in 1918, and is a combination of two stories: Shlemiel Crooks
(set in St. Louis), and "Chicken Bone Man," a story about my dad's aspiration
as a young boy in Memphis to play the blues.

If you are associated with a group that is looking to perform a short musical
for the local community, I can send you a copy of the script, which the
playwrights have now finalized, along with a synopsis of the play, bios of the
creators, and three MP3s of songs from the play.

The musical runs 50 minutes, has 2 female parts, 5 male parts, and some extras,
with the casting being gender flexible and doubling possible.

The Kaufman Center posted an excerpt of the first performance on YouTube:

You can also read a bit about the history of the production at:

The play has not been published yet, so licensing would be directly through the
playwrights, composer, and lyricist, but I know that all of us would love to
see the play performed outside New York.

Thanks.
