Jerusalem Books Newsletter Update March 2013

Dear Friends,

We were able to attend the Jerusalem International Book Fair which was held
at the Jerusalem Convention Center aka Binyane he-Uma. David Ehrlich hosted
a panel at which aspects of the work of Yehuda Amihai were discussed. The
hot writer, Nathan Englander was celebrated in the media and by the public
as well as participating in a discussion with Etgar Keret on the
significance of translation in literature. Something that is especially
important in an age of international commerce and globalization of ideas and
culture.

This should lead us nicely into an update regarding Golinken's, the Status
of Women in Jewish Law. I neglected to mention that this important work in
English had an earlier Hebrew edition (aprox. 2000/1). What is important to
note that this volume/edition has fifteen chapters while the earlier had
only 10 chapters. It's in English, scholarly, and significantly expanded
and updated so it's 'like new.' 978-965-7105-69-6 Cat 81136. $28.00

What is new and exciting in the field of Hebrew literature is Shai Agnon's,
Shlosha Sipurim. Permit me a bit of respectful humor. This is it. The holy
grail. Finally, Hebrew Literature in comics or should I say, graphic novel
form. Publ. Shoken, 978-965-19-0880-4, Cat 81341 $24.00

Koren's Maggid publishing has released two new books, Esther and Shmuel
(aleph). Important, scholarly, Bible exegesis, commentary. Esther, by
Yonatan Grossman, is modern research and analysis of the many hidden aspects
of this story.isbn 978-965-526-139-4 Cat. 81317 $ 30.00 Shmuel, isbn
978-965-526-094-6, is Bible, Tanakh, prophets, with new commentary on kings
of Israel, Cat 81327 $29.00

Beshem ha-tevuna, conversations with Rabbi Hayim Amsalem, has been released
and was highlighted at the Jerusalem Book Fair 2013. This important figure
former member of Knesset and critic of the Shas party and aspects of the
Haredi world ran unsuccessfully in the last elections. He represents an
important and rare independent voice in the orthodox world and Israeli
society. 978-965-512-231-2 Cat 80735 $29.00

Malkat Ha-kunkhia, is a 3 volume biography, of Naomi Frankel. It is a
Hebrew work published by Gefen. The books cover the life of the author from
youth in Germany through emigration to Palestine and life on kibbutz. The
book's author Tsipora Kokhavi Reini is a lecturer in Hebrew Literature in
Bet Berl, Bar Ilan and Tel Aviv Universities. Ha-aretz listed the price as
138 NIS, but it turns out that that was for just one of the volumes.
978-965-229-614-6, also ending 612-2 and 613-9, Cat 81236 $ 69.00

Finally, I would like to mention a new book entitled: 'R' Yoel Moshe
salomon, poalo ve-toldotav,' which chronicles the history of this important
figure from 1838-1912. Once again this book which is scholarly and
comprehensive crosses the line between Jewish History and Israel and
Zionism. This important figure had a life which traversed Russia, Egypt,
Palestine and Europe, raising money for charities, synagogues, and hospitals
in Jerusalem. He was involved in much more including the founding of Petah
Tikva. It is an important work published by Dr. Simha Mandelbaum. The
book has some photos, letters, documents, diaries and more.
Cat 81228 $ 42.00

Naturally, there are many more books to write about. In addition we have the
upcoming visits by Barbara Streissand and President Obama to anticipate.

Wishing all of you a wonderful Springtime and a Happy Passover from all of
us at Jerusalem Books ltd.

Thanks,

Jeff Spitzer
