Hi Edith, I don't know if this is too late and I am not sure if you would like the book. That said ... I have had library patrons particularly guys enjoy, "The Landsman" by Peter Melman. It's language is raw the action rough and the protagonist is no hero. He is a Jewish orphan from New Orleans living the wrong side of the tracks. Elias Abrams joins the Confederate Army not out of serving the Southern cause, but to get away from his gambling ruffian gang members after he killed a man. His reformation begins while he is serving in his unit when his commander receives a letter from a Jewish New Orleans woman to be given to any Jewish soldier in the unit to encourage to fight for the Confederacy. Abrams begins begins to reflect on his notorious life and that he has to face his demons. the book is not for everyone, it is in trade paperback and gives an unvarnished side of the Civil War from the Southern point of view.
