Hey all you AJL LibraryThing kids, (especially Riva of Bangor Maine)

I contacted Jeremy of Library Thing (which just happens to be in Maine) and asked him about Riva Berleant (who just happens to live in Maine, too)'s question as to how the Library Thing catalog becomes public and yet bars users from changing the entries. I have copy-pasted his answer.

For everybody less that's as stoked about LibraryThing as I am, you also go into the Common Knowledge Group <http://www.librarything.com/groups/commonknowledge> where you can pose any question and all sorts of knowledgeable persons will jump to your aid usually with information that works. Though sometimes, I have to admit, you have to go bashing and thrashing through the brambles to get the answer you were looking for on your own, just like most stuff in life.

Here is Jeremy's answer
Sure - all they need to do is to share the link to their LibraryThing profile page:

http://www.librarything.com/profile/MEMBERNAME

That will allow anyone to view/search/browse the catalog, but not make any edits to the records. Only someone logged into the account with the username and password will be able to add/edit/delete books. If Riva wants to see how other browsers would see the catalog, she can sign out of the account and then just go to the profile page and she'll see what they would see (or she could look at another member's profile, which would have the same effect).
Best,
Jeremy

Have fun at convention, I only wish I could be there. In 1982 in the middle of snow flurries and more cold than I knew what to do with, I rode my bike from El Paso to Arkansas. Texas is enormous.
