Dear Clare, Thank you for your inquiry. With Brain Hive, you would give your library patron an access code so they could download the book of their choice to their e-reader. The difference between the Brain Hive program and purchasing an individual e-book is that with Brain Hive you (and your patrons) will have free access to Kar-Ben's entire collection of Jewish children's e-books, vs. purchasing a (relatively expensive) multi-user e-book license for an individual title. With an individual e-book license, you have no guarantee that the particular book will be checked out, and your budget may only allow you to purchase a limited number of children's e-books. With Brain Hive your patrons would have access to all of Kar-Ben's 150+ children's titles and you'd only be charged $1 per download for the books that your patrons actually check out. You wouldn't need to guess which books your patrons might like; they may choose any book they wish out of Kar-Ben's entire collection.
With Brain Hive, you will be able to set your budget at any level you wish - let's say you can afford to spend $25 or $50 per month on Jewish-themed children's ebooks. With Brain Hive, your patrons will be allowed to check out a total of 25 (or 50) books at $1 per download (charged to your library). When your budget is used up, your patrons receive a notification saying that the book is not currently available and to check back after Y date (when your new budget will have kicked in). Budgets can be set weekly, monthly, annually, unlimited, whatever you wish. Brain Hive is fully functional through any web or mobile Internet browsers, desktop computers, laptops, netbooks, as well as tablet devices with an active Internet browser, Nook Tablets and Nook Colors, and Kindle Fires. Once our Kar-Ben collection becomes available on Brain Hive, I will send out more detailed instructions on Hasafran as to how the program works and how to get started if interested- it's really easy and will allow your library budget to get a lot of bang for its buck, only paying for titles that your patrons check out. It's a really easy and affordable way to bring e-books to your library patrons. I hope this is helpful, Clare. More detail will be forthcoming once we launch. (PS - All Kar-Ben ebooks are currently available at ebooks.karben.com at single trade pricing, and a variety of Kar-Ben e-book titles, many with audio, are also currently available at single trade pricing through Amazon, barnesandnoble.com and iTunes.) How will our library patrons have access to Brain Hive? Will the down load go directly to a patron's ereader? Do patrons or libraries have to register? Our library owns kindles that we lend. Can we download books to the library's kindles? What is the difference between a $1 download, and purchasing the ebook? These ebooks may be purchased through the Open Road landing page or directly through Amazon, B&N, iTunes, etc. Please be aware that not all e-readers currently offer audio capabilities for ebooks. We currently have about 20 Kar-Ben titles available for these e-readers and plan to have about 50 available in "Read-Aloud" format by year end, with all new Kar-Ben titles beginning with our Fall 2013 season to be available in this format. We are planning to make many of our backlist titles available for these devices as well, although not all will have the "Read-Aloud" function. In addition, Kar-Ben is in the process of launching a Judaica collection through an ebook platform called "Brain Hive," which will allow libraries access to any Kar-Ben title at $1 per download, meaning that there will be no need for your library to purchase individual e-books but rather that your library patrons will have access to Kar-Ben's entire e-book library at no charge and you will simply be charged $1 per download with the option of purchasing individual titles if you see there is great interest in particular books. Brain Hive titles will not initially offer the Read-Aloud function. Our Brain Hive collection will allow libraries to set budget parameters, and will provide an assortment of reports. I hope to have full information for AJL libraries available soon. We appreciate the interest of the AJL in our e-books!
