Dear Aliza,

I had a similar situation 6 years ago when I set about recataloging and
automating our entire collection. I have worked in many libraries, using
Elazar, Weine, Dewey, LC, etc. I can say that LC is all wrong for a small
library like yours (and mine). It's like using a bazooka on a fly and is far
more appropriate for a large college or public library. Now, if all of your
materials are completely Jewish, then Elazar is definitely the way to go
(though some might make the case for Weine, but I think that's more useful for
mixed collections.)

As for the cataloging aspect, I don't know anything about PrimaSoft, but most
automation systems will enable you to download MARC records from most sources,
including Sinai Temple Blumenthal Library, which has a huge collection, all in
Elazar.

I hope that helps.

>I have been volunteering as a self taught librarian for a small, well used
by both adults and children, orthodox synagogue for the past nine
years.  I chose to use Elazar for cataloging our now
approximately 2500 books and feel it has worked well for the most
part.
>
>We want to automate, but, although no one has the experience I've gained
over the years, the rabbi and administration, who until now have only
contributed by buying books, has decided on handling this themselves.  They
have chosen PrimaSoft and have opted for the LoC catalog system.  I don't
think using LoC is appropriate for our library, but
I'd appreciate some input from the hasafran members.
>
>The reason given for wanting to go with LoC is to be able to bring up
immediate information which will greatly reduce the time involved to set up the
catalog.  I fail to see any long term benefits for our situation, but maybe
I'm wrong?  One problem I foresee is patrons who haven't yet mastered the
logic of the Elazar system; how will they understand LoC?
>
>Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.  I've been a silent reader
on hasafran for many years and have benefited from your combined wisdom so many
times.  Thank you so very much in advance, and for all your past
advice.
