Newsletter Jerusalem Books ltd Rosh Ha-Shana –c- Summer 2013

Dear Friends,

After really enjoying the AJL in Houston TX this year we are back at work
here in Jerusalem. Please allow me to thank everyone who attended the AJL
and especially those who planned and implemented the AJL personally for
myself and for my staff at Jerusalem Books who all feel part of this group
and world of Jewish – Israeli books.

At the end of last month Hebrew University, Mt. Scopus hosted the World
Congress of Jewish Studies. There were hundreds of scholars, lectures on
Bible, Talmud, History, Jewish Thought – Philosophy, Israel, Zionism, Hebrew
Literature and much more.

One of the many highlights in terms of publication is ‘Seride Teshuvot
mi-hakhme ha-imperia ha-ottomanit,’ by Shmuel Glick, from Shoken / Bet
Midrash La-rabbanim be-amerika, ‘Sidre Teshuvot…’ isbn 978-965-456-062-7.
Responsa remnants by the Ottoman Empire sages from the Cairo Geniza and
Cambridge U. manuscripts' collections; A limited edition of 300 numbered
copies. Might I suggest, in a way I never do, “get this now rather than
regret it later (soon.)” Cat 82142 $ 206.00 2 vols

Mikhlelet Herzog – Herzog College has again published important works of
research and scholarship in the areas of Bible, Jewish Studies. ‘Tosafot
Ramban le-perush le-tora she-nikhtevu be-Erets Yisrael,’ by Yosef Ofer and
Yonatan Jacobs is an example. The teachings, on Torah exegesis of
Nachmanides (Spain 13th Cent CE) written in (Land of) Israel. This is a
subject of classical Jewish Studies. Isbn 978-965-02115-0-0, Cat. 82250
$ 40.00

Another important title, is ‘Emuna ve-Adam le-nohakh ha- Sho’ah,’ is by
Tamir Granot. Faith and Man Confront the Holocaust is a two volume scholarly
work of Philosophy, Mahshevet Yisrael and Jewish History . This first volume
is on “hagut,” the philosophy, thought of the Holocaust, “research and
studies.” Second volume Derashot u-mifgashim. Published by Tevunot, the
publisher of Herzog College, 2013, isbn 978-965-706657-5, Cat. 82251 $ 64.00

In Hebrew Literature please note: ‘Ha-Shirim ha-hi Yafim be-Ivrit שירים הכי
יפים בעברית : מאה שנות שירה ישראלית’ a hundred years of Israeli Poetry,
edited by Menachem Ben and Doron Koren. The book is a collection of many
Israeli authors from Hayim Guri and Yehuda Amihai through Hagit Grossman,
Kobi Oz poets of the 21st Cen. CE. The book, published by Yediot Ahronot and
Chemed books, isbn 978-965-482-963-2, Cat 81561, $ 39.00

Overlapping Hebrew prose and Israel and Zionism and a few other subject
headings like Holocaust is the biography, entitled, ‘Hayav ha-kfulim shel
ha-tsayad ha-aharon,’ the double life of the last hunter. The book
chronicles the life of an Israeli military figure, Alexander Sela, who was
from the jewish survivors of Vilna Lithuania and became a figure in the
Mossad. He was involved in intelligence, training and hunting nazis and
terrorists. The book is written by his son, Amir Sela, published by Orion
(Holon) 2013. Cat. 82252 $25.00

I would like to mention the new book by Meir Shalev, ‘Shetayim Dubim,’ which
I understand is simply amazing and wonderful. It is a, ‘do not miss,’ title.
Which is why it is a bestseller in Israel. Published by Am Oved,
978-965-13-2401-7 Cat. 82284 $30.00

At this juncture I would like to include another example of an important
title which conflates* (did I use this word correctly? I have noticed that
this word has crept into the vocabulary of my American academic friends.*)
several subject areas such as Jewish History and Jewish Thought. ‘Ha-Miyut
Ha-Nivhar,’ is an important book by Zvi Eckstein and Maristela Boticcini
The book examines what made the Jewish people successful from the time of
exile aprox 70 AD through and until the expulsion from Spain. The curious
survival of a decimated people (from aproximately five million in the Roman
Empire to perhaps one fifth of that in the 2nd Cent. CE), through an
economic and cultural flowering in the 13-15th Cent. CE is analyzed. The
author mostly attributes the success of the often disadvantaged Jews, to
their circumstances and culture. Landless and systematically oppressed, yet
literate, urban, commercial and internationally networked, this minority
survived and often prospered. Tel Aviv University Press, isbn
978-965-7241-58-5 Cat. $29.00

More marvelous overlap is ‘Nashim ba-Tana”kh,’ Women in the bible Moral and
Artistic aspect,’ by Rahamim Melamed Cohen, with text and selected quotes
The unique and outstanding work is an Art book of modern, Israeli, Jewish
Bible graphic art, with text, bible, philosophy, and is self published by
the author, artist. The author suffers from ALS, (is paralyzed and uses a
computer which reads eye movements for communication and creation) and is
seen as an inspirational figure all over the world. The primary Bible texts
are with English translation. A remarkable gem. Cat. 82312 $ 28.00

Wishing you all a Happy and Healthy New Year, from all of at Jerusalem
Books.

Sincerely,

Jeff Spitzer
