Dear Safranim,

Elizabeth Rynecki asked me to post this. Please reply to her off-list.

Thanks,

Barry Walfish

Moshe Rynecki (1881-1943) was an artist who painted scenes of the Polish Jewish
community in the interwar years. He had a keen eye for exploring and
documenting the daily rhythm and life of synagogue, teaching, labor, and
leisure. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Moshe had close to 800 works.
Moshe perished in Majdanek. After the war the family recovered just over 100
paintings in the cellar of a home in Warsaw's Praga district, across the river
Vistula. For many years the Rynecki family believed that just this single
bundle survived. Fortunately, that was not the case-many more pieces survived,
and Moshe's great-granddaughter Elizabeth Rynecki is searching for more pieces
and information about the works and her great-grandfather. She recently learned
that the University of Toronto's Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library has a
collection of black and white photographs of Moshe Rynecki's paintings as well
as original letters written by him and it has inspired her to reach out to
other libraries to learn if she might discover more information and original
source materials in their collections. If you have ANYTHING that you think
might be useful to her, please contact her directly:
