Date: Wed, 20 Nov 2013 16:01:17 +0200 From: Katherine Aron-Beller <[email protected]> Subject: Workshop: Comics and Jewish Studies at Columbia in January
"TENT: Comics" will explore the role that Jews have played in the development of comic strips, comic books, and graphic novels, from their invention to the present. A group of fans, scholars, and emerging artists and writers in the field will gather to explore the richness of contemporary comics and the current state of the industry. Participants will read classic comic strips and comic books, as well as rare and archival examples, and discover the unsung Jewish artists and entrepreneurs who helped to shape the form of the serialized comic book and innovated in the development of the graphic novel. Meeting some of the leading contemporary creators of comics and graphic novels, we will consider how this art form has become a major medium for expressions of religious, ethnic, and national identities. Tent: Comics at the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies, New York City January 19-26, 2014 *If required, lodging will be provided; most meals will be provided. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from New York City.* For more information about this workshop, email [email protected]<mailto: [email protected]>. Application deadline: November 24, 2013 (There are still limited spaces available!)
