Hi-
I ordered a copy of this unique book--beautifully illustrated but filled
with much text--for our library and just started reading it. The book doesn't
gloss over some of his troublesome views about Israel but it does discuss
little-known facts about his very positive attitudes toward South African Jews
and Judaism, e.g., the day after he was inaugurated South African president he
attended a Shabbos service in a local shul and the Israeli ambassador to SA was
in attendance; Mandela said several times that Jews were his best white allies
during the struggle; a Jewish law firm was the only one that would hire him,
are just few of the vignettes. He was a beloved figure among many SA Jews
which is evident in the essays in this poignant anthology.
It seems like a fascinating work!
The record below is from First Search. At first, we had problems ordering
this expensive book from South Africa but I think we were later able to get it
from a major vendor. If you have any problems, please write to me but it
might take some time for me to track down the order information.
Shabbat Shalom,
Donald
