General Grant and President Grant: Scandal and
Redemption<http://www.bnaitorah.com/learning/adult-learning/539-general-grant-and-president-grant-scandal-and-redemptio>

Please join us on *Sunday, January 12, 2014 at 10am* as we welcome Dr.
Jonathan D. Sarna, noted scholar, who will speak about his recent book, *When
General Grant Expelled the Jews*. Dr. Sarna was featured in the PBS
documentary, *Jewish Soldiers in Blue and Gray* which explored the hidden
stories of American Jews in the Civil War. The book was timed to bring to
light a part of American history little known, on the 150th anniversary of
General Grant’s notorious anti-Jewish order, issued just weeks before the
Emancipation Proclamation. What was President Abraham Lincoln’s response?

[image: Cover]Come hear the story about General Orders No. 11, as it was
known. What was the truth about the black marketeers whom Grant was trying
to eliminate? How did this order come back to haunt Ulysses S. Grant when
he ran for president of the United States, and later, how did President
Grant redeem himself once in office? How worried were these Jewish
immigrants, bravely trying to avoid the persecution of their European kin?
Now uncomfortably thrust into the political public eye, Jews in America
were suddenly a “class of citizen.” This occurred just at a time during
Grant’s administration when there were repeated efforts to adopt a
“religious” amendment to our Constitution making the United States of
America a Christian country. How did the Jewish community balance both
identities, American and Jewish?

Dr. Sarna is the Joseph H. & Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish
History at Brandeis University and Chief Historian of the new National
Museum of American Jewish History. Sponsored by CBT’s Adult Learning
Committee and Book Group, this special event will be held at *Congregation
B’nai Torah, 225 Boston Post Road in Sudbury*. A book signing and reception
will follow the talk. All are welcome! *CBT Members: Free/Non-Members: $5
at the door.*
