Hi All: I am library committee chair at my temple Beth Israel in Port Washington,NY. We have had an existing library space since 2005 and have a collection of about 3000 books. We have an active library committee of 7 people. The library is also used for meetings and classes. We have part time librarian (3 hours a week) are catalogued in Dewey and use resourcemate software. We don't have much involvement from religious school and circulation is small. We expect to have on-line access for our congregation shortly. We don't have a library budget-but do well enough to sustain ourselves (and pay for the librarian) with donations. But we do put together programming events (cultural arts) about 4-5 times a year in the library which I think is highly valued by the temple board. The space is also used for meetings and classes. As part of a capital campaign the temple will give us new library space and a design committee has been formed to work w-an architect on renovating a portion of the older building including the library. I am on that committee to represent the library's concerns.
I would really appreciate anyone who has been involved in some fashion with this process to possibly give me your feedback and suggestions in approaching and voicing our committee's wishes and concerns as this project moves forward. Also, if you have any concrete ideas as to what those wishes and concerns for the new space might be- including what our committee should prioritize- that would be a big help. Many thanks Bob Epstein
