Newsletter Jerusalem Books ltd Winter 2013 - 2014

Dear Friends,

Yad Tabenkin of the Kibbutz movement, Magnes have published, 'Bein ha-prati
le-tsiburi,' Private and Public: Women in the Kibbutz and the Moshav.' The
book is edited by Sylvie Fogiel - Bijaoui and Rachel Sharaby, in Hebrew with
a 14 page English Summary, isbn 978-965-282-112-6. The book is published
also with the assistance of the Academic College of Ashkelon. The book
examines the roles of women on the Kibbutz and Moshav before and after the
founding of the State of Israel. The development of new roles and identities
as well as gender equality or lack thereof. The roll back or changes in
recent years as well as the issue of collectiveness in areas such as child
rearing are researched in this collection of articles by different authors,
scholars. Cat. 82758 $ 40.00

The field of Hebrew Language and Literature is broad and deep. It is an area
we at Jerusalem Books are proud to navigate. One important sub-field is the
area of Shira Mizrahit, Hebrew Poetry of the 'edot ha-mizrah,' the
"eastern," Separdic Jewry from Morocco to Iran. Erez Biton is releasing a
new book of Hebrew Poetry, 'Le-Fa'ate mizrakh kadima,' Last year
we distributed widely Nofim havushe einayim,' Blindfolded Landscapes,' which
is especially significant as this author, a recognized leader in this field
is also, blind.( Cat 82003)

Also in this area is the work of Katzia Alon, and her new book, 'Shoshanat
Ha-Meri ha-shekhora.' The book is important, scholarly and involves literary
analysis, criticism and comparison between leading authors of 'Mizrahi,'
poetry including a chapter on Erez Biton, Roni Somek and Haviva Pedaya to
mention a few. Cat. 83283 $22.00

Before moving on, and on the more popular side of modern Hebrew prose, is a
book by Bookie Naeh an Israeli crime writer. It is entitled, Ha-Hevre
ha-Tovim, the Good Guys, or might I reference a popular American Crime film,
the Wise Guys, I think it was. The author is something of a crime journalist
or local Tel Aviv crime tour guide and this is his latest. To me, this topic
is of increasing interest as criminal assassinations proliferate on Israeli
streets. Cat 83291 $28.00

At the other end of the Israeli Hebrew book spectrum is, 'Mamlekhet Olam
Ha-halakha,' this major, monumental work is important but 'non-academic,' It
is however, scholarly and a reference book and research source on over five
hundred, (500) years of Sephardi Jewish History and teaching. It is
published by Or Va-derekh, by Mordechai Reuven HaCohen, in Jerusalem and is
783 pages plus a 16 page index of rabbis, with copious footnotes and indices
on Rabbis, Rosh Yeshivas and books published by Rabbi / Author and also by
community and country. I believe that any librarian and scholar who sees
this will agree that it belongs in any research and Judaica library.
This book traverses the areas of Rabbinics and Jewish History Cat. 82968
$ 112.00

Continuing in the area of Rabbinics with some more esoteric books, I would
like to ask, what to do with a new book entitled, Sefer refu'ot Teman,
yalkut sha'are refu'ah.' Shelomo Tsofar, z"l. The book a comprehensive
review of Yemenite medicinal plants, herbs is certainly of interest to
libraries collecting Yemenite writings, Jewish History and Yemenite and
Middle - East culture and tradition. The book employs two approaches the
description of plants and their uses and a description of ailments and
organs and their treatments. The problem is, the book is listed as volume
three (3) and volumes 1 & 2 came out over twenty (20) years ago. What is a
book vendor to do? Cat. 83188 $ 33.00

Sefer Mishpate Yisrael, second edition (both editions 2013) has been
published, anonymously by "important Rabbis," and is a polemic against
secular and even Rabbinic courts which follow secular. State laws. The book
is important as an example of certain conservative, fundamentalist strains
in Judaism and within the Haredi world. It displays a suspicious Rabbinic
approach which rejects pressured divorces which has been an 'enlightened,'
trend in Halakha and Rabbinic Judaism in part as a solution for Agunot and
in recognition of women's rights. The book is published in Monsey, NY and
may disappear from bookshelves at any time. Cat. 82806 $29.00

While much of the Rabbinics - Sifre Kodesh publication is directed towards
yeshiva students and may be basic books on Mishna or Talmud and many books
on Halakha are basic and practical guides to ritual observance for example
of / on Kashrut or Shabbat there have always been serious recognized
publishers releasing important scholarly works.

Some such examples include:

Ahavat Shalom Institute has published 'Talmud Mesekhet Eduyot,' which is
Rabbi Shelomo Serrilio's commentary on this tractate of the Jerusalem Talmud
- Talmud Yerushalmi. This is an important commentary on an important
tractate by a major Sephardi commentator, who was among the generations
after the exile from Spain. Rabbi Serrillio lived in Salonika and later
emigrated to Israel. The book is from his manuscript and is scholarly. Cat.
83076 $39.00

'Esh Ha-Torah,' is a new two volume work on the life, times and teachings of
Rav Aharon Kotler. The Lithuanian, major 20th Century CE Sage, Posek and
teacher. He began at the great Litvak yeshivot of Slobodka, Slutz and Vilna
and in the midst of the holocaust was rescued and emigrated to the US. He
founded many yeshivot, re-invigorated American Orthodox Judaism and set up
institutions in Lakewood, NJ. The book is by Aharon Surasky. - Some may
recall some years back a book entitled 'Making of a Godol,' which was banned
by some who felt the portrayal of R' Kotler was inappropriate. This book
which has footnotes and some facsimiles of letters and documents, while
rabbinic hagiography, nevertheless documents specific names, places and
dates as well as political and social events and developments. Cat. 83057 $
76.00
