Shimon ben Shetach, mentioned in Pirke Avot, was involved with witches of
Ashkelon.
If you want more details, I'll look up chapters and verses.
The witches story is from the Jerusalem Talmud and has been retold with changes
in several collections of Jewish folklore and children's picture books
and I can give you sources for these as well.
I think Honi is mentioned in Taanit 3:8.
He was able to bring rain in the right amount and planted carob trees for
future generations;
there's a picture book by Phillis Gershator called Honi's Circle of Trees or,
an earlier version, Honi and His Magic Circle.
Or see https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Talmud/taanit3.html.
Not sure if it's Mishnah or Talmud, but the story continues in a Rip Van Winkle
fashion
with Honi waking up, realizing that all his friends and family are dead,
praying to God to let him die, and God granting his wish.
The only Jewish mystery that comes to mind has to do with idols being offered
food,
which is gone the next day.
I think Abraham proves that the idols did not really eat the offerings
themselves
when he sprinkles flour on the floor after everyone has gone home and sees
footprints the next day.
But I'm not sure where I read this.

Stories are how we make sense of the world.

Subject: [ha-Safran] searching for engaging middle grade Mishnah stories
Hello amazing safranim,
I am looking for short stories or chapter books to read aloud to middle school
students that have a Mishnah connection or theme.
A mystery would be wonderful.
Many thanks in advance for your suggestions.
