Thanks so much for posting this very thoughtful article, Amalia! As a librarian, and as a lesbian raising my two kids with my wife, I was thrilled when The Purim Superhero was published, and only wished it had been published in time to be enjoyed by my kids. As we Jews (and librarians!) know, when you're in a minority, it's very powerful and empowering to see reflections of yourself and your family in books. And, it's just as powerful and important for folks not in that minority to have access to these books, as well, in order to learn about "the other, " which will hopefully help to break down ignorance and fear.
I've always been proud of AJL for promoting and supporting excellent literature that also reflects the wonderful diversity of Jews all over the world; and for the profound respect we librarians from all walks of life show each other at meetings, conferences, and online.
