Dear Rav, I do not have an answer but I think the Slavic reference at UIUC should help the student. He or she should chat or email the following page.
http://www.library.illinois.edu/spx/srs.html or email [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> if you did not hear back from them I will be happy to make a direct connection between the student and them. Thank you Laila From: hasafran-bounces+lhoussei=illinois....@lists.service.ohio-state.edu [mailto:hasafran-bounces+lhoussei=illinois....@lists.service.ohio-state.edu] On Behalf Of Shmuel Ben-Gad Sent: Wednesday, March 19, 2014 9:24 AM To: [email protected]; Hasafran Cc: Cathy Eisenhower; Mark Yoffe Subject: [ha-Safran] Jewish applicants to conservatories Shalom Safranim. A colleague has received a question from a student. She describes it below. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. "The student wants applicant data for major European conservatories to crunch the numbers re: Russian Jew violinists at the turn of the century. His professor has suggested this, or at least okayed it. I've been looking in WorldCat for books on the history of conservatories in Europe and in specific countries, but that doesn't seem to be much help. Aside from contacting the conservatories themselves, does anyone have any ideas? The applicant figures would have to include the numbers of Jewish students who applied. I'm just not convinced this information even exists--that these records would still be around." The student adds this: "Of course, they could include: University of Music and Theatre Leipzig, The Paris Conservatorie, University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, and the Royal College of Music London. I reread my email, and I am afraid I erred slightly. In particular I am looking for applicants to these schools circa 1890s-1914 that were registered as being Jewish." -- Thank you. B'chavod rav.
