There is a lot to do on and near the strip, but for those who want to get away from the glitter, there are a surprising number of great options.
Some of my favorites are: The Clark County Wetlands http://www.clarkcountynv.gov/WetlandsPark from their website “The Clark County Wetlands Park includes 2,900 acres of water, trails, and trees along the Las Vegas Wash. As well as the Wetlands Nature Preserve, Nature Center, and access from multiple trailheads, the Wetlands Park includes walking and biking trails in designated areas, plentiful opportunities for wildlife viewing, photography, and simply escaping to a unique natural environment. The Park is a shaded, green oasis overlooking the city of Las Vegas. Nominated for America’s Great Outdoors<http://www.doi.gov/americasgreatoutdoors/index.cfm> recognition in Spring 2013, the Clark County Wetlands Park is free to enter at all access points. The Park is open from dawn to dusk every day. The Nature Center is open from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm every day except New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.” Springs Preserve http://www.springspreserve.org/ “The Springs Preserve is the premier place in Las Vegas to explore the valley's vibrant history through interactive science and nature exhibits, botanical gardens, hiking, trails, and live animal shows.” The park also includes the “Nevada State Museum is a unique part of the overall Springs Preserve experience. Through expansive historic collections, the museum works to advance the understanding of the history, pre-history and natural history of Nevada, emphasizing Southern Nevada and its relationship with surrounding areas.” Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area http://www.redrockcanyonlv.org/ The is beautiful hiking here – but go early – it gets hot! Valley of Fire State Park This is about a 45 min.- 1hour drive – but well worth it. http://parks.nv.gov/parks/valley-of-fire-state-park/ “Valley of Fire is Nevada’s oldest and largest state park, dedicated in 1935. Ancient trees and early man are represented throughout the park by areas of petrified wood and 3,000 year-old Indian petroglyphs. Popular activities include camping, hiking, picnicking and photography. The park offers a full-scale visitor center with extensive interpretive displays. Several group use areas are also available. The park is open all year.
