I’m the science librarian at Santa Clara University in Silicon Valley, with
a somewhat odd request. I am also a writer ( michalstrutin.com ), mostly
natural and cultural history, including *Discovering Natural Israel*. I
met a librarian at the recent SPARC conference* who suggested I ask the
HaSafran list my question:

Does anyone have any suggestions for a literary agent or publisher who
might be interested in a historical novel focused on the story of
Zelophechad’s daughters and the 40 years of the Exodus? This “long
midrash” is supported by strong, but not intrusive research. Below is a
short synopsis and bio. Please answer to [email protected] .

A reader of Jewish history and translated Israeli novels, I’ve just joined
HaSafran and am enjoying the “conversation.”

Thanks!

Michal Strutin

*Synopsis: *Promised Land: a Biblical Novel takes place during the Exodus,
the 40 years Israel spent in the desert before entering the “promised
land.” The book centers on five daughters (Numbers 27:1-8), who sought
inheritance rights to the land. Noa drives the effort after their father is
killed, navigating around an imperious older sister, an unpredictable
assortment of judges, an arranged marriage, and a rival wife. But each
daughter has a story, from naïve Hoglah to Tirzah the warrior.

Because the human condition hasn’t changed, the story is rich with life and
death, kindness and betrayal, laughter and tears, love, sex, war, and
politics. The action is “ripped from the headlines”: tensions between a
free generation and parents who were slaves; scheming political operatives;
religious extremists; and, when Israelites and Midianites clash, thorny
issues such as “Whose land is it?”

*Bio: *I was managing editor of *National Parks*, an editor at *Outside*,
the *San Francisco Examiner*, *Washington Post*, and edited at *Rolling
Stone*. I've written articles and features for national publications,
including the *New York Times*, *Los Angeles Times*, and *Outside.* I wrote
and coproduced AARP's national daily radio program. I am a member of the
Authors Guild and the Historical Novel Society, and have participated in
numerous book fairs and stand-alone presentations. I’ve written eight books
on natural / cultural history and travel: four award-winners, two still
selling well. www.*michalstrutin*.com <http://www.michalstrutin.com>/‎

* For anyone involved in Scholarly Communication, the
SPARC<http://www.sparc.arl.org/>conference was really worthwhile.
