Shalom, The chapter of Jewish history concerning the Crypto-Jews of Spain and Portugal is a fascinating one, yet how many people know that the Spanish Inquisition ended only 180 years ago (in 1834) and that the story isn't yet over because there are still communities of Crypto-Jews living in Spain and Portugal?
Terra Incognita, a novel about modern-day descendants of Spain's Crypto-Jews, tells the story of what happens when one small village discovers the secret of their community's past - that they all descended from Jews - and explores the challenges the villagers face when confronted with this new and unsettling component of their identity. Gloria Mound, Executive Director of Casa Shalom: The Institute for Marrano-Anusim Studies, has this to say about the novel: "Ms. Astaire's research concerning this area is top notch .. Although marketed as fiction, Terra Incognita is important in the way it portrays the attitudes of these people even in modern times, and should encourage all Jews to be aware of the subject and do all possible to aid the Marranos- Anusim." I am currently offering copies of Terra Incognita for just $9.99, including shipping within the United States. This is a "close-out" price for the hardcase edition published by Targum Press (350 pages, ISBN: 978-1-56871-537-7), and is only available while supplies last.
