Author Alexis O'Neill says: I'm working on a study with the Ventura County Reading Association (vcrareading.org) on "Do Author Visits Make a Difference?" As you know, librarians have traditionally been the ones to advocate for author visits in schools and libraries, but with fewer librarians in elementary schools, there are fewer visits, and thus this important connection with students in the process of reading and writing is becoming endangered. The VCRA is doing a quantitative study to see if an author visit has a measurable impact on students' attitudes toward reading, writing and revision. (When you do a search of the literature, you'll find that while there are anecdotal articles on how great author visits are, there's no hard data.) The pilot study was really encouraging, with some significant results. VCRA plans to expand it in 2015. But while they're working on funding for the expanded empirical study, they're also collecting qualitative data from former author visit hosts.
