After more than 15 years in print, "The Pomegranate Pendant" continues
to receive literary recognition.
Dvora Waysman has been awarded the 2014 "Shabazi Prize" for the
historical novel she wrote, "The Pomegranate Pendant", published by Mazo
Publishers ( www.mazopublishers.com ).
The committee of the Shabazi Prize for the Heritage of Jews from Yemen
said "we have decided to honor and award you with the 2014 Shabazi Prize
for your novel, The Pomegranate Pendant. We
acknowledge its sensitive and creative literary style, which is
deserving of the highest praise. Your book is a special cultural
treasure, which adds an important chapter to the Zionist History by
commemorating the First Aliyah of Jews from Yemen [Aliyah b'Tamar] and
their participation in the redemption of Eretz Israel and the
establishment of the State of Israel."
Presentation of the award was made in front of an audience of more than
500 people on Wednesday night, November 12, 2014 in Petach Tikvah, Israel.
The Prize is awarded to researchers, authors and artists who have
contributed to the research of the heritage of the Jews of Yemen and
their culture.
Mrs. Waysman spoke to the audience in both Hebrew and English. She
explained how she began her research by enjoying the Yemenite cuisine in
a popular Jerusalem Yemenite cafe. After a year's worth of research,
"The Pomegranate Pendant" was published.
"The Pomegranate Pendant" is the story of Mazal and Ezra ben-Yichya.
Married at a young age, they embarked in 1882 on their long journey from
Sana'a (Yemen) to the Holy Land. Their young hearts were filled with
dreams of the glory they were sure awaited them in Jerusalem.
But those dreams were quickly dispelled by the reality they encountered:
dark, towering walls of stone and a community of pious but impoverished
Jews with customs foreign to them.
How would the ben-Yichyas find their place in this new world peopled by
European Torah scholars, and who would buy the exquisite jewelry they
fashioned?
This stirring saga spans four generations of a family of Yemenite
goldsmiths at the vortex of history in the Land of Israel. Their
tragedies and triumphs, their sorrows and joys, and most of all, the
heroine's profound love for the Holy City, create a vivid and lasting
image of an ancient land rising from two millennia of slumber to an era
of splendor.
"The Pomegranate Pendant" is available in a variety of editions. In
addition to the standard edition, the book is available in LARGE PRINT
and from Kindle in a download version.
The book is published in Hebrew, "Rimon HaZahav - The Golden
Pomegranate". Rights have been sold for a French edition.
An English audio book edition is in production.
