Jerusalem Books Newsletter Hanukah 2014

Yael Dayan has authored an autobiography entitled, 'Mineged,' 'Transitions.'
This book is Israel and Zionism, Hebrew Literature and Mid - East
International Relations and Politics all rolled into one. At the same time
it is the personal story of the daughter of one of Israel's military hero's
and the sister of Asi Dayan. Rather than focus on the riveting family
relationships and characters, I suggest that the researchers will be
interested in her ten years in the Knesset, her advocacy for religious
freedom, civil and human rights and peace with the PLO. Published by Modan
, Cat 84454 $28.00

The Van Leer Institute and Kibbutz Ha-Meuhad have published a book by Amit
Gish, entitled, 'Eks Libris', Ex Libris, Chronicles of Theft, Preservation
and Appropriating at the Jewish National Library.' Isbn
978-965-02-0706-9. This book too is Israel and Zionism and Jewish History as
well. Those interested in crime will be interested in the theft of rare
books by scoundrels and those interested in Israel and Zionism, 20th Century
History will want to research the acquisition and preservation of
Palestinian book collections around 1948. This Hebrew book is scholarly and
examines many issues and aspects regarding the holocaust, the collection of
Jewish History and Culture and protection from and loss of treasures to
criminal schemes. Cat. 84783 $ 27.00

Homer'r classic, the Odyssey, has been translated into Hebrew from the Greek
by Aharon Shabtai and published by Shocken, 978-965-19-0915-3. This is a
translation and while libraries generally exclude the collection of
translations, most have a specific inclusion for Classic works translated
into Hebrew. After all its not necessarily a work that many readers will
read in the original Greek language and the act of translation, the text,
says so much about the Hebrew Language, now and once. Cat 84884 $46.00

Co-incidentally, the second volume of Homer's Odyssey, 'Omero La Odisea :
kantes XIII-XXIV,' has been published. This precious and serious work is a
translation into Hebrew of this famous Classic, from the translation of the
work into Ladino. The text in Ladino and Hebrew appear side by side. Moshe
Ha'elyon translated from the Greek to Ladino and Avner Peres translated from
Ladino to Hebrew. The linguistic and cultural significance of this cannot
be overestimated in my opinion. Cat. 84888 $ 35.00

The Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies, has published
'Inglorious Revolutions, State Cohesion in the Middle east after the Arab
Spring.' This scholarly and important collection of essays is edited by
Brandon Freidman and Bruce Maddy. The first section includes an examination
of Secularism, Nationalism and Islamism. Part 2 deals with Syria, Lebanon,
Saudi and Yemen, while part 3 focuses on Egypt and the Sudan, part 4, with
North Africa, part 5 with the Palestinians and part 6 with Turkey and Iran.
Experts in each of these countries and societies delve into the struggles,
ethnic groups, political and religious movements in each country. For
example, The status and role of Copts in Egypt is analyzed along with
de-Bathification in Iraq and the monarchy in Morocco. 978-965-224-101-6
This book is highly significant and relevant and at the same time, is in
English and accessible to college students, and useful to grad students,
professors, researchers and the general public. This work may prove
essential and influential with journalists and policy makers, historians
and yes, regular readers. Highly recommended. Cat 84841 $ 44.00

On a bureaucratic note I must report that the Israel Customs Authorities are
striking and have been all this week. Almost no coverage on this. One
article that mentioned this situation suggested that 'imports may be
delayed.' What about Israeli Exporters?

As the year 2014 approaches its end I would like to thank our friends on
Hasafran and the AJL for their ongoing and continued interest in our work
and in Israeli publications, Jewish Studies, Hebrew Books. We really
appreciate your support.

All of us at Jerusalem Books Ltd wish all of you a Warm and Happy Hanukah.
