Hello Etta --

You can see an etymology for "kishke" at
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/kishke

However, my own derivation is: *kishkes *= testicles <* Yiddish* < *reversal
of* Hebrew alef-shin-khaf @eSHeKH = testicle, gonad (at a time when the
aleph had a GHT/CHS sound). See the tweets by Linda at
https://twitter.com/davidschneider/status/425757729924202497

Here is a good example of folk etymology: "Kishke, a dumpling with meat
stuffed in it, and therefore kishkes are testicles."

Reversals across languages of words which, for any reason, should not be
said in public are quite common. These words include taboo body parts. For
a list of such reversals, see

For taboo body part reversals on anthropomorphic maps in the Middle East,
see Sinai, Canaan, Negev & yam SooF in

I realize I have not answered your question ... but "intestines" may be
irrelevant except as regards "gastronomic Jews". The body part that was
thought to be the seat of the emotions was the kidney. Hence the phrase
"get (one's) goat" means to get control of his emotions. See my comment to

Subject: [ha-Safran] strange question re kishkes

... I have a very intelligent patron who has posed this question:
I'm looking for anything about kishkes (the body part, not the food).
I seem to remember some sage comment about Jewish culture being
located symbolically in the kishkes, but that's as much as I can remember
about it. Where would I look for rumination on Jewish culture and guts? ...
