Sefer Kishoni, is a new book 'by' the legendary (deceased) Israeli Author
and humorist, Efraim Kishon. Also entitled Kishon, Write or wrong. Kishon
was said to exemplify the idea that a prophet is unappreciated at home. His
works were translated and loved by millions worldwide but he met some
resistance at home in Israel. The Hungarian born writer and film maker is

of ethnic absorption tensions in the new Israeli society are insightful,

As always there is a vast stream of Rabbinic works, aka, Sifre Kodesh which
are continually being published. The trick is to be able to distinguish
among them and identify the important works worthy of even essential for
Hebrew - Jewish Studies collection.
Recently we have seen an edition of the Humash Or Ha-Hayim ha-mefurash,
Genesis, with Yiddish translation. This 844 page, first volume with Onkelos
and Rashi commentary is published out of NY by Machon Ziv Or HaHayim. 84752

Avner Shalev has authored a two volume Bible commentary, entitled, 'Nelekha
ad Ha-Ro'eh.' The impressive work is based on the writings of R' Avraham
Yitzhak Kook z"l, The work is accessible and scholarly. It includes
references, cites to R' Kook's writings, as well as Talmud within the
paragraphs and chapters and explanatory footnotes as well.
I might direct the reader to the portion on parashat mishpatim, in Exodus,
where the issues of law, justice and mercy are analyzed in light of R Kook's
teachings. On the one hand one must not twist justice to benefit the
sympathetic poor but the concept of mercy and fairness might be compelled
under an interpretation of and integration of the principle of 'lifnim
mishurat ha-din,' translated mostly as, "beyond the letter of the law."
This principle which I would translate, as, 'before the letter of the law,'
recognizes that fair justice may require not strict implementation of the
law but conduct, 'beyond, or before,' the letter of the law and that such
behavior may be imposed on the parties under Jewish Law. The balance
between "mercy" and justice is examined and the dispute between Rabbi Tarfon
and Rabbi Akiva is discussed. This two volume title is highly recommended
for students and scholars of Rav Kook the towering 20th Century CE, Chief
Rabbi of Palestine, teachers and students of Jewish Thought and Philosophy
and all those interested in Jewish Law or the Religious Zionist movement.

There is popular, self help 'kabbalah,' and real Kabbalah. Ahavat Shalom has
published, 'Sefer sha'ar ha-gilgulim ha-shalem.' Shimon Agassi is the
author - editor of this 596 page work. Definitely the real thing for
scholars and students of Kabbalah. Cat 84617 $ 44.00
In contrast, 'Sefer Ha-Sodot, Segulot ha-hokhma bo nikbetsu..' is a new book
published in a limited edition. It is mystical Kabbalah complete with
symbols and tables. It is unusual, with material newly published from
manuscript,501 pp. It is by /ed. Yisrael (Meir) Almagor (Son of R' Zekharia
Almagor (Majar) Cat 84990 $128.00 (if available.)
I am reminded that we have recently seen Sefer Otsrot Melakhim, by the same
author, compiler and family. That book very similar in that it also has
copious symbols / letters, segulot, kame'ot and hotamot-seals. However, this
book was first published in 2006 and had 259 pp. This expanded edition has
about 65 pages of facsimiles from manuscripts and is 301pp. $159.00
Wishing you all, a warm and productive winter and a Happy Purim.
