Contents:
1-The Little Toy of Tisha B'Av: The Moroccan Jewish tradition consisting of
children receiving or buying a doll's cradle on the day of Tisha B'Av is
correlated with three Midrashim from different periods in the Jewish history
relating the birth of the Jewish Messiah, Menahem, on Tisha B'Av.
2-The Pesach celebration in the Jewish community of Marrakech followed by the
practice of Isru Chag called Mimuna. Such custom has diverse expressions in the
Sephardic world, but in Morocco, as the author discovered it, the celebration
reflects the various episodes of the exodus from Egypt following the order of
narrative in the book of Exodus. The name given to such custom is related to
the beliefs that the praying mantis, Hjaja Mimuna, can reveal the road to Zion
for the lost children of Israel in exile.
3-Shavuot Water Activities, The Lemonade Booths and The Salt of the 'Omer. The
author explores the sources of these popular Jewish practices in Morocco, which
were not in practice by the Ashkenazi Jews.
4-"Children's Weddings" Ceremony. A unique cultural phenomenon consisting in
the celebration of mock weddings for five-year-old Jewish children. Such a
custom, which was deeply rooted in the Moroccan Jewish community, lost its
significance, but the author tries to reestablish it by his research.
