The New York Metropolitan Area Chapter of the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL-NYMA) will hold its Winter 2015 Conference on Tuesday, January 27th, 10 am-1:30 pm. The program will include a curated tour of the exhibition of rare Hebrew books and manuscripts "Ginzei Seforim" which focuses on items published during the first 100 years of printing.
The conference will be held at the Chabad Lubavitch Library Exhibition Hall, 770 Eastern Parkway (between Kingston and Brooklyn Avenues), Brooklyn, NY 11213 (10-11 am), and at Oholei Torah (former Brooklyn Jewish Center), 667 Eastern Parkway (between Brooklyn and New York Avenues), Brooklyn, NY 11213 (11 am-1:30 pm). PROGRAM: 10:00-11:00 am Tour of Ginzei Seforim Exhibit at Chabad Library, including introduction and Q&A session with Rabbi Shalom DovBer Levine, Director of the Chabad Lubavitch Research Library and Curator of the Exhibit (more info: http://lubavitch.com/news/article/2031137/A-Walk-Through-the-Pages-of-History.html). 11:00-11:30 am Registration, Networking & Light Lunch 11:30 am-12:15 pm "From Qumran to U'Belechtecha Ba-derech: A Brief History of Jewish Collections Over 2,000 Years" - Naomi Steinberger, Director of Library Services, Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary. An illustrated survey of Jewish collections. This overview will discuss the development and movement of Jewish collections on six continents over the course of 2,000 years. 12:15-1:00 pm "Making History Relevant and Personal" - Dr. Janette Silverman, Outreach Director, Jewish Theological Seminary, Davidson Graduate School of Education and professional genealogist. This session will explore the ways that we can use primary documents, archives and other library resources to help our teachers and students connect with historical events. We will look at library holdings and resources that can be accessed over the internet to help our students become engaged and identify with history.
