Putting the resolution's merits/lack-thereof aside, the resolution itself is politically toxic to everyone, no matter where you stand. Passing the resolution will foster divisiveness in the library community, and instill fear and uncertainty, which can only weaken us. It's chilling.
It also puts academic libraries at odds with the upper administration of our universities. The association of American universities passed a statement condemning academic boycotts. The president of the University of Rochester issued a statement saying that the University is against the boycotts. The resolution not only affects how we see ourselves as a library community, it can damage the reputation of libraries within their organizations. The resolution doesn't just offend librarians, it offends our provosts, deans, presidents, boards of trustees, and donors. It is not only evil and hateful, it's also a fools errand.
